Austin-Based Doom Innovators Aiwass Release New Scottish Folk-Inspired Single

Aiwass, the Austin-based Doom Metal band that started as a simple solo project in a Phoenix apartment, keeps getting better and better—and their sound continues to evolve toward the avant-garde. 

Led by musical visionary Blake Carrera, Aiwass first released the bone-rattling His Name Was Aiwass EP in early 2021, the pummeling Wayward Gods later that year, and then the incredibly layered and complex The Falling in 2023.

Now Aiwass is back. Never a project to stay in one lane, Aiwass is blending traditional Doom Metal, Black Metal (think Wolves In The Throne Room), and (surprisingly) Celtic Folk for “The Cruel Brother,” a fresh take on a traditional Scottish folk song. 

“The Cruel Brother” credits:

The song was produced and mixed by Grant Husselman and mastered by Edsel Holden.

“This song is a traditional Scottish folk song about a woman who marries her lover, resulting in significant bloodshed,” says Carrera. “The process, which was done online across the North American continent, was one of true collaboration and mutual inspiration. By melding together our mutual loves of Celtic Folk music, Doom Metal, and Black Metal, we believe that we have created something unique and powerful that can transcend cultural lines.”
