Brass of Doom: Eight Foot Manchild Worships at the Shrine of the Orange Sunn

Eight Foot Manchild is unleashing another EP on an unsuspecting world. It’s an interesting mashup of Stoner/Doom and traditional brass. Yep: sax, trombone, and TUBA (among others.)

I’ve been a fan of Eight Foot Manchild ever since I did a reaction video in the early days of our YouTube channel. Overall, I really enjoyed it, but I couldn’t help but think that it could have been better. You can check out my mini-review here.

Shrine of the Orange Sunn is the better I was thinking about, but couldn’t quite put my finger on. This is another quick-hitting EP comprised of singles they’ve released over the past 3 months or so. It’s heavy, full of groove and downright BRASSY!

Dylan goes into detail on the EP in this exclusive Clean and Sober Stoner interview!

Check out the interview above for all sorts of juicy details about the recording, the history of the band and a HOT TAKE on vinyl.

One of the things we spoke about in the chapter of the video titled, How Do You Electrify A Tuba?, is changes in how they process and even mic the instruments. That change shows up in this EP, big time. The second song, Take It To The Chorus, Titanosourus, showcases the significant improvement. The saxes are far more distinct, the brass is more brassy, and the tuba fricking rips.

Seatopia is one of the most effective nods to King Crimson’s use of brass I’ve ever heard. It’s naaasty good on every level, and brings a decidedly heavy and doomy atmosphere that goes beyond the humorous hi-jinx.

If you’re already a fan of Eight Foot Manchild, this is an EP to go nuts over. If you’re new to the band, this is the perfect time to dive straight in. This is a well-planned and executed dose of Doombrass that exceeds my expectations in every way. With Shrine of the Orange Sunn, they’re clearly evolving past the “novelty act” they could easily become. The cleaver lyrics, nods to Zappa and Crimson, and movie clips are all here.

But man, it’s so much more than that!
